For keeping us alive, blood is the most vital fluid in our body. If the level of blood in our body becomes too low, we will not be able to survive. To keep us healthy and alive, blood needs to be at its optimum level with all the essential things.
What is Blood?
Blood is a body fluid which circulates in every part of the body to transport the oxygen and necessary nutrients. Blood also carries carbon dioxide and the waste materials from the cells which are produced during energy production and metabolism. The carbon dioxide is removed by the lungs while the waste materials from the blood are filtered by kidneys. In addition, blood carries hormones and cells as well which fight with various infectious diseases.
Majorly, blood is composed of plasma and blood cells. The plasma is a yellowish watery liquid. The primary purpose of plasma is to transport nutrients, hormones, and proteins to the body parts that need it. Blood obtains its red colour from the cells, called red blood cells (RBCs), which carry oxygen in the blood.
How Blood Travels?
In the body, blood travels with the help of heart, which is a muscular organ, functioningas a water pump. The blood travelsin blood vessels inside the body in a closed path. Our body has two types of blood vessels. These are arteries and veins. Arteries transport the blood from the heart to all thebody parts. On the other hand, the veins transport the blood from all body parts to the heart.
Why Blood Travels in the Body?
For staying alive, travelling of blood in our body is very essential. It is because a constant supply of oxygen is needed by our body which is carried by red blood cells (RBCs). RBCs need to go back to the lungs to carry oxygen and exhaust carbon dioxide when the oxygen from them is consumed. The brain is the most sensitive organ to oxygen in our body. If the supply of oxygen is seized to the brain, it starts to get unrecoverable damage within minutes.
Transporting the waste materials from the cells for removal from the body is the other reason for the travelling of blood. In addition, the resources that the cells have used from blood should be renewed.It makesthe cells continue functioningin a proper manner.
Types of Blood Cells
The human body consists of three main types of blood cells, which are as follows:
Red Blood Cells (RBCs):RBCs carry oxygen to every part of the body. The oxygen is anessential component for releasing the energy that we needto do work. RBCs comprise a special protein, called haemoglobin.Haemoglobin is responsible for taking the oxygen from the lungs. As the blood absorbs fresh oxygen, its colour turns bright red.
White Blood Cells (WBCs): WBCs have a vital role in the immune system and fight with infection. There are different ways by which WBCs are activated to reach and fight with infecting bacteria and viruses. These cellsidentify the foreign microbes with antigens on their bodies, and then they fight them accordingly.
Platelets: Platelets come into action when a blood vessel carrying blood gets damaged. These cells gather into the damaged area quickly and stop the blood from leaking outside.
There are around eight blood types. A person can only obtain the blood that matches with their body. These blood types start with one letter or two letters and they end with a mathematical sign: positive (+) or negative (-). These blood types areA+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+, AB-
The human body increases the body and blood temperaturefor producing more WBCs when the body gets sick. These WBCs thenfight infections.
An average-sized person has around 30 trillion RBCs. This number makes 70% of all the cells of the body.
In the human body,blood also carries insulin, which is a natural hormone.Insulin helps the cells in absorbing sugars. A person gets diabetes when there is an insufficient production of insulin.
Blood makes up about 8 percent of our total body weight.Adult bodies contain about 5 litres of blood.
